Is it true that laying bark mulch in your perennial gardens will rob your soil of nutrients? I've been putting in fresh layers every year! Thanks!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Pattie McIntyre

Bark mulch won't rob your soil of nutrients. There is some concern about using fresh wood chips or sawdust because as they decompose, they use available nitrogen. If used over a period of years without adding nitrogen to the soil, it could eventually result in a deficiency which could affect your plants. Not so with bark chips or shredded bark. Hope this clarifies things for you!
