I just bought Merry Berry Holly at Home Depot. Is this a male or female plant? Do I need some of each? I plan to use as a 40' hedge. Also I'm concerned about cold hadiness for this region. I did buy the plants at the local H.D. Thanks for any and all info you can give me.

Ilex x ?Merry Berry? (Merry Berry Holly) is hardy in USDA zones 4-8 (you are in zone 5). It is a densely branched, narrow evergreen shrub with dark purple stems clothed in purplish green, spiny margined leaves. It is self-fruitful and produces abundant clusters of bright red berries. Ideal for use as hedge, accent or in mass plantings. Grows to 6 ft. tall x 3 ft. wide.

Best wishes with your new hollies!
