| My lawn is a mess! I have oxalis, crab grass and a fine blade of grass taking over my lawn. How to I kill these and have a heathly, heartly lawn? Also, what kind of grass would you suggest for the Southern Calif. area....one that is disease resistant. |
| The University of California made some turfgrass studies there in Irvine and determined that the best turf for the area is tall fescue. They recommend the following varieties: Falcon Rebel Houndog Olympic 6.4 T 5.1 UV Alta Kentucky 31 I'd start rehabilitating the lawn by using a broadleaf weed killer that contains 2,4-D (many brands out there and they all list clover, oxalis and crabgrass on the label). After you've killed the weeds, rake them out of the lawn and then overseed the bare areas with grass seed. Once the new grass seeds are growing well, you can put your lawn on a regular feeding schedule. A thick, healthy lawn will crowd out most weeds. Feed your lawn in April, June, September and late November with a 3-1-2 ratio of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Periodically you can use a weed and feed product if new weeds are threatening your lawn. Best wishes with your lawn! |
