The Q&A Archives: Do wild birds eat ripe tomatoes?

Question: Only the ripe tomatoes are eaten. We frequently see swarms of birds flying away from the tomato plants.

Answer: Birds will eat ripe tomatoes, as will many creatures including squirrels and other rodents. The best defense is to pick the tomatoes a little early and allow them to finish ripening on the kitchen counter. Pick them once they have begun to color up. Do not place them in direct sun and do not refrigerate them. I hope this helps!
