I purchased a 4 in 1 combo cherry tree from you last year and this spring it looked great lots of buds but the leaves never came out. Now I have growth from the base of the tree and i'm wondering what type of tree the cherry branches were grafted to. is the root a cherry tree?

I'm sorry to hear about your tree. The most common rootstock is Prunus avium or "Mazzard" cherry -- a "wild cherry" unfortunately not really suitable for use as a fruit tree although it is sometimes grown as an ornamental tree.
