I am going to plant flowers in planters. The soil doesn't look too rich and the planters recieve full sun all day. Can you please advise as I really want to make a good impression since it is my first time doing this.

Sounds like you're looking for some hearty plants. Try Coreopsis, Euphorbia, Gaillardia, Kniphofia, Liatris, Marigold and Zinnia. Each of these plants do well in arid climates. To make them really grow and bloom, water the plants at least once a weekby flooding the planters so all of the soil gets thoroughly wet.
