Answer: Sounds like the first thing you need to do is address the weeds in the lawn area. Hand digging is an option; using Weed and Feed is another. Once you have the weeds under control, create a flower bed by digging out all the current vegetation. You can use some of the soil to fill in the low spots in the lawn. Broadcast grass seed over the areas you've filled in to create a more even lawn area. If you work in small areas you should be able to finish one project before moving on to the next. Plant annuals this year for some color; next spring you can plant perennials, which will come back year after year. Your garden center will have a large selection of plants. Choose those that grow well in the sun exposure the area has - full sun, part shade, etc. Helpful nursery staff can help you choose the most appropriate plants. Hope this gets you started on a beautiful new backyard!
