If you clear the weeds from a small area and plant flowers, then train your dogs to stay out of the area (or fence the area), you'll have something pleasant to enjoy when you go out in the yard. As time and money allow you can create additional beds, again training your dogs to stay out. Over time you'll be able to create a beautiful back yard. My concern is how uneven the yard is presently. The weeds (that suppose to be grass). Can I still have enough to create a beautiful back yard? If so, How. What kind of plants. I will need a path way from front to back as well. Please advise. Keep in mind that I am a novice. |
| Sounds like the first thing you need to do is address the weeds in the lawn area. Hand digging is an option; using Weed and Feed is another. Once you have the weeds under control, create a flower bed by digging out all the current vegetation. You can use some of the soil to fill in the low spots in the lawn. Broadcast grass seed over the areas you've filled in to create a more even lawn area. If you work in small areas you should be able to finish one project before moving on to the next. Plant annuals this year for some color; next spring you can plant perennials, which will come back year after year. Your garden center will have a large selection of plants. Choose those that grow well in the sun exposure the area has - full sun, part shade, etc. Helpful nursery staff can help you choose the most appropriate plants.
