Sweet peas should be planted as soon as the soil is workable (early spring) so that the plants have a strong root system before warmer weather arrives and the upper part of the plant begins to thrive. Plant the seeds 1-2 inches deep and 2-3 inches apart in a deep bed or container with plenty of compost. Since sweet peas have a tough seed coat, I also soak my seeds for a few days before planting. Some gardeners nick the seed coat with a knife. The seeds usually germinate in 7-21 days. |
