Can I give normal/all-purpose plant food to any house plant? Is it better to give it what it is supposed to have?

Unless you're growing orchids or some other specialty plant, houseplants are generally happy with a 5-10-5 formulation. I'd stick with water soluable fertilizers manufactured specifically for houseplants. Otherwise, you will risk overdosing and burning the roots and foliage.
