Do the little black ants affect the growth of a plant or flower? Do they feed off the roots? thanks

The little black ants you see in the garden do not harm plants. They climb up plant stems and stalks to feed on the nectar in the flowers and/or to feed on the sweet excrement from aphids (called honeydew). The ants do not feed on the roots of plants. Hope this answers your question.
