Why does my petunia look dead at the bottom and green at the top?

Without seeing the plants it is difficult to diagnose the problem, but the most likely cause is either a fungal infection of the lower leaves, or radiated heat from the ground. To keep petunias lush and green, pinch out the growing tips. This will encourage branching and the development of new leaves along the lower stems.
