Veronica,

Choose a lawn type fertilizer with a nutrient ration similar to 3-1-2 (such as 15-5-10 for example). Apply it in early spring, late spring and mid summer at a rate of 2 cups per inch of trunk diameter. Spread it evenly in a large circular area extending out to the outer branch spread and then water it in well. Maintain moist but not soggy soil throughout the growing season.
