| Rolf, I know of no good way to keep the wasps off of the hummingbird feeders because the sugar water is attracting them. Perhaps washing any sugary residues off of the outer part so the feeder will help. Some feeders have screens that keep things with short mouth parts from reaching the nectar. As far as the apples are concerned, there is only a subtle change in color as a Granny Smith ripens so you will need to wait and at some point sample an apple to determine when they are ripe and what a ripe one looks like so you can plan to harvest the others.
