Can variegated ginger grow under/around pine trees? If not, what are some ideas for a tropical look around two mature pines that I could use?

It's difficult to get plants to grow under pines. The soil is dry and acidic and there's very little sun. Wild ginger seems to be happy in such situations, as does lamium, pachysandra, vinca and sweet woodruff. I'd give the ginger a try.
