I have heard that there are hybrids of some tropical plants such as bananas and and some palms that will grow in my area. I would like to know if this is true. I'm interested in getting some.

It's true! Stokes Tropicals (www.stokestropicals.com; ph# 800/624-9706) has Musa basjoo, the Japanese Fiber Banana! It doesn't say anything about the flavor of the fruit, but says it has the most striking blossoms of any banana. The Banana Tree (715 Northampton St., Easton, PA 18042; ph# 610/253-9589) carries various hardy palms. Enjoy your excursion into tropical gardening!
