The Q&A Archives: Hand-pollinating yellow and zucchini squash plants

Question: I have some yellow squash and zucchini plants which are now flowering beautifully. Most of the flowers are male, though a few female flowers are there. When the female flowers open, how do I hand-pollinate them so squash will grow? There are not bees around here to do that for me.

Answer: Laurel,

Use a Q-Tip or an artist's paintbrush to gently transfer pollen from the male to the female blooms after they open up in the morning. Hand pollination is very easy and works fine.
