You could plant annuals such as viola and pansy and ornamental kale for flowers and foliage this fall. The viola and pansy should also bloom next spring for you. You could plant mums for flowers this fall. Mums will sometimes perennializse and can be grown from year to year in the garden. Fall blooming perennials would include asters, tricyrtis and Japanese anemone. For winter blooms, you might enjoy Helleborus. These will bloom in very early spring.
