I have very little sun in my yard - Lots of huge trees. What can I plant that will trive in the shade? My planting zone is 7. |
You might be able to grow hostas and ferns along with other shade loving plants such as tricyrtis, hellebore, liriope and Japanese anemone. If your soil is sandy, be sure to add generous amounts of organic matter such as compost. This will feed the soil slowly over time and help the soil hold moisture and nutrients longer, as will using an organic mulch year round. If there are tree roots throughout the area, you may be more limited in what you can grow. The reason for this is that the roots steal moisture and nutrients from the soil. In this case, you may need to experiment and see what works best for you. Vinca minor, liriope and epidedium are more drought tolerant and might do better for you than some of the others. Good luck with your planting! |
