| My hydrangeas have not bloomed last year or this year. One is blue and one pink. The bushes are very healthy looking. I want to know why they didn't bloom. |
| The most common causes for non-blooming hydrangeas is 1) lack of sufficient sunlight, and 2) winter injury. Most common hydrangeas bloom on new shoots which develop on old wood. If your hydrangeas freeze down to soil level each winter there will be no old wood on which new flowering shoots can develop. The result is lots of lush, green growth, but no flowers. I'd highly recommend Endless Summer Hydrangea for your cold winter gardening region. This is the first Hydrangea macrophylla that blooms on both old and new wood, so it flowers virtually all season long and is hardy to zone 4. Endless Summer? will produce magnificent pink to grape to blue blooms depending on the pH of your soil. Alkaline - pH 6-7 will produce pink blooms. Acidic soil - pH 5-5.8 will produce blue ones. For blue add aluminum sulfate to the soil. |
