Hello, I moved to Texas recently and I was wondering how and when to start a garden. I want to plant vegetables and herbs in my backyard and was not sure how to go about it, what time of year is best to plant, and the most effective way to maintain and protect it? Any information is helpful. Thank you, alexis |
Alexis, You can garden almost year round in College Station but the seasons each bring unique challenges. Winter is mild but erratic requiring some protection during cold snaps. Summer is hot but there are a few vegetables that are able to take it. I suggest you visit your County Extension Office for free publications on gardening that will guide you in a number of the topics you mentioned. These are mostly also available online at the following web site: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu... Now is the last chance to plant summer squash, cucumbers and green beans so they'll have time to ripen before frost. In September you can begin to plant the cole crops like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. When it cools off a bit more in October lettuce and spinach can begin to go in. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon! |
