We just moved into a brand new home with no shade trees in the back yard and are wondering what is a fast growning shade tree that can grow wonderfully in our area.
Our new home has sod in the front and back and seems to be having trouble surviving the heat, what can we do to help..other than watering it that is.

Yvette,

Watering is the main thing for that lawn in the heat. Wait until late September and give it a light fertilization. As far as a tree is concerned I think you would like the Drake elm, also called Chinese elm. It grows fast and has attractive bark. The tree casts a medium to light shade so you can still grow a lawn quite well underneath its branches.
