My privet hedges have grown massive. I would like to trim them back to around 6 foot tall. What time of year is best to do this?

Thanks,
Tom

The best time would be late winter/very early spring, before it begins to grow again for the year. This is not a good time to prune. Pruning in late summer/fall would encourage late season growth that will not have time to harden before winter. This reduces hardiness and could increase the risk of winter damage.
