| We have a wall behind us that we has weeds growing right now. I have cleaned most of it and planned on putting vines and climbers to take over that area because we literally have to put a ladder on the wall to get to the area. I want to make sure that the plants I have chosen will grow. Question for you, Am I going in the right direction?? |
| A groundcover planting of some kind can help control weeds, yes. There will be an establishment period of several years while the intended planting becomes rooted and takes hold. During this time you will need to water and weed between them to prevent the weeds coming back. Most vines take about three years to establish, then they grow rampantly. You might want to use a low growing groundcover in between them for the time being to help crowd out weeds. The tawny daylily (Hemerocallis fulva) is very aggressive for instance might work in a suny area. If you are planting the vines at the base of the wall and want them to climb up it and then spread, make sure the vines are able to climb the wall. Some vines are clinging and can climb a bare wall just fine but others twine and so need a trellis of some kind to wind their way through and upward. I hope this helps. |
