Crape myrtles produce flowers on new wood so you'll want to prune just before new growth appears. Watch the tree for signs of new buds swelling on the branches and start pruning then. After the tree has finished blooming you can prune it back again and the new growth it produces should flower, giving you two flushes of blooms per year.

Enjoy!
