The Q&A Archives: lawns

Question: my grass has too many brown spots and too many weeds. I would like to know how many times my grass need water a day. thanks

Answer: It sounds as though your lawn is in need of renovation. Lawn can get along with one or two deep soakings per week. Daily watering keeps the roots close to the surface and dependent upon lots of water. Instead of daily watering, set your sprinklers to water for 15 minutes every 3 or 4 days.

Dig out the weeds and rake to remove the brown areas, then reseed. Or, use a weed and feed to kill the weeds, then rake out the dead weeds and reseed the lawn.

Once the new grass is up and growing well, and you keep it watered, it should grow thick enough to crowd out any new weeds.

Best wishes with your garden!
