The Q&A Archives: potting up

Question: I have several potted shrubs that are root bound, can they be potted up to the next size this time of yr? Also, can potted perennials be divided and re-potted at this time? Both the shrubs and perennials will over winter in a cold frame greenhouse. Thank you

Answer: It shouldn't cause problems to repot at this time. Since plants in containers cannot send roots out very far from the plant you won't have to worry about accidentally severing roots, which is often what causes transplant shock. You should be able to simply slide the plants out of their old pots and into the new ones without problem. The plants probably won't even know they've been moved.

Best wishes with your garden!
