The Q&A Archives: noisy ac unit in the back yard

Question: What can we plant around our air conditioning unit, that is installed in our backyard,to hide the unit and provide shade for it and at the same time drown the noise that it makes. It is impossible to sit & enjoy our backyard because of the noise. I thought a fountain might help but is there anything else we can do? Thanks for your help.

Answer: Shirley,

A plant or two in a row around an air-conditioning unit will do very little if anything to reduce the noise level. However you can use plants to screen a view just keep from putting them too close to the air-conditioner unit in order to not block its ability to take in air and cool off the coils. Small compact evergreen shrubs would be a good choice for such a planting. You might also want to consider putting in some type of a lattice panel around the unit. The lattice would provide a visual screen or you could also plant of vine on the lattice.
