Michele,

Pansies are the standard flower for the cold season. Other cold tolerant flowers include sweet peas (don't bloom until spring) and snapdragons which are somewhat less cold tolerant than pansies, stock which is fairly cold hardy, and pansies close cousins viola and Johnny Jump Ups. Calendula and Dianthus are two other fairly hardy choices. Then there's flowering kale and cabbage the hardy veggies-turned-ornamentals that offer colorful foliage during the winter.
