The Q&A Archives: Germinating Hibiscus Seed

Question: I'm having trouble getting my hardy hibiscus seeds to germinate. Out of 24 only one has broken the surface. We soaked and nicked each seed. Any suggestions? Thanks. R. Moran Ballwin, MO

Answer: Sounds like you did the right thing. Germination should take between 10-30 days. Chip seeds and soak in hot water for 1 hour. Keep at 70-80 degrees F. One explanation is that only one seed out of the 24 was viable. The only other explanation might be that you chipped the seed too deep near the site of the embryo. This would, in effect, make the seed not viable. You need only to scrape the seed to break the surface to get a good result..
