The Q&A Archives: Holly plants

Question: When is the best time to shape and prune holly bushes. I planted them last year.

Answer: Hollies are best pruned in late winter or early spring before they begin to grow for the season. Additional light pruning can be done through about July if needed. Do not prune in late summer or fall as this will encourage new growth that will not have time to harden off sufficiently before winter and will result in excessive winter damage.
