Dogwoods should be pruned in the spring, after they have finished blooming. Burning bushes should be pruned in early spring; weigela should be pruned in early spring. It's too late to do any pruning now. Pruning encourages new growth which will not have enough time to mature and harden off before cold weather arrives. It will freeze during the winter months if it doesn't have time to harden off, which means you'll need to prune it off in the spring. Instead of pruning now and again in the spring, why not wait until spring to do your pruning?
