Mary Anne,

You can oversee you were Bermuda grass with ryegrass. The best time to do this is in mid to late October. Wait for a few weeks before fertilizing the newly seeded rye grass. Keep in mind that in the spring when the rye grass is growing strong and the Bermuda grass is trying to come on the over seeded rye will stress the Bermuda significantly. There is little you can do for this except to mow the lawn back and give the Bermuda a chance to come out.
