raised beds-weeds - Knowledgebase Question

i have a 9 X 12 oval shaped gflower garden thathas a miniture magnolia tree planted in the center.i just cleared away burmuda grass that had crept in despite landscape cloth.Thrie is a bird feeder 4 feet away from the bed and I found bird seeds all in the soil. We really wanted our yard to be bird and butterfly friendly . But the weeds started taking over Would a raised bed help and also it seems impossible to me to remove all the seeds do i dig up all the soil?? HELP

There is probably not a really easy solution to all those issues. The Bermuda grass can be stopped by installing a vertical barrier about 8 inches deep around the bed. This may not be practical. You could also continue to use the weed barrier cloth making sure to control any Bermuda that crawls up on top of that. There are grass only weedkillers a work quite well for this. For the birdseed I suggest using a shop vac to pick up the seeds on the surface. The only other thought would be to have some type of Matt or screen on the soil surface to catch the seeds. You would then have to dump the seed off of the mat periodically.
