The Q&A Archives: gardenia

Question: when is the best time of the year to plant them in florida.. and what exposure is best thank you are there different types of gardenia plants

Answer: Maureen,

The best time of year to plant a shrub in your area is from November through February with the earlier part of that range being best. You can plant at other times of the year but you'll have to take extra care to keep the root ball moist but not too wet in order for the plant to establish and survive well. Gardenias prefer a bright area with mid to late day shade. They like a soil with some compost mixed in that it's kept moist but that drains well. There are a variety of different cultivars to choose from with some getting larger and some staying in smaller.
