| Hello, My question is about new sod. I live in an area which is very hot during the summer and cold in the winter. I just had the sod put in a few days ago and I already notice some spots going dry. What kind of fertilzer can I put down or what do you recommend I do? | If the sod is drying, it probably isn't making good soil contact in those areas. I'd lift an edge and peek beneath the drying spots. You may discover the ground is bone dry. If this is the case, roll the sod out of the way, rake the soil to loosen it, add a bit more soil and then roll the sod back. Tamp it down lightly to make sure it is making good contact with the earth and then water it thoroughly. You should be watering twice a day for 10-15 minutes the first two weeks after your sod is installed. The third week, water every other day for 15-20 minutes. After the sod has rooted, water once a week for about 20 mintues. Now isn't a good time to fertilize. The weather is still hot, hot, hot and your new sod is having enough trouble rooting. Don't expect a lot of top growth for the next few weeks. When the weather cools in October, you can feed with a 16-20-20 formula to encourage top growth and rooting. Best wishes with your new sod! |
