I want to have a vegetale garden. If I use fertilizer and sometimes weed killer or moss killer for my lawn, is it safe to have near my lawn? If I use wood as an edger for the vegetable garden, is treated wood safe or what kind should I have? Also, how do I prepare the soil? |
I'd be inclined to build a raised bed for my veggie garden rather than take a chance that close proximity to the lawn and the chemicals which are used to keep the lawn green might leach into the veggie garden soil. A raised bed will also warm earlier in the spring, giving you a few extra weeks of gardening. You can edge the garden with cedar or redwood (both are slow to decompose) rather than treated wood, which could leach preservatives into the soil. I'd use a 3-way mix of topsoil for the raised bed (it contains garden soil, sand and organic matter such as compost). Good luck with your garden. |
