My lawn has was looks like blades of grass coming off of what looks like vines growing in our yard. If I go to pick it up and pull it out by the roots the vine/weed can sometimes be a foot long. What is this? and how do I get rid of it?

It sounds like crabgrass, although I can't be sure without seeing it. The best control is to pull it out, roots and all. You can also use Scott's Halt Crabgrass Control. Be sure to apply according to label directions.
