| Plant garlic in full sun in well-drained soil. You can either plant in mid-fall, or in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. It's best to purchase garlic specifically for growing--some grocery store garlic has been treated to inhibitsprouting. If you do try store-bought garlic, look for organically grown produce--it's less likely to have been treated. Separate bulbs into individual cloves, and set cloves 1 to 2 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches apart. Place the bulb so the root side is down, pointy end up. For best results, plant only large, solid cloves. Garlic is usually fairly trouble-free, though it can have some of the same problems as onions. Just keep soil reasonably moist throughout the season; adding some compost to your garlic bed at planting time should assure plenty of nutrients. Then, start harvesting your crop when about 75 percent of the leaves have turned brown, and enjoy! (You can save some of your crop for planting next year.) |
