| Squash plants do have male and female flowers. Usually the first flowers to open on squash and pumpkin vines are male flowers. They open early in the season and are there to attract insects to the plant. Female flowers follow, and are usually pollinated as soon as they open because insects have already made it a habit to visit the plant.
