| I planted Vinca Vines in hanging baskets the beginning of summer and they are doing well and would like to keep them well during the winter. What should I do? Will they last hanging on my porch or should I bring them inside? Help? Tonya |
| Although the vinca vine (Vinca major) will sometimes overwinter successfully in your area when planted in the ground, the hanging baskets do not provide enouogh insulation around the roots to be a reliable way to save them outside for next year. I would suggest rooting tip cuttings to start small plants to overwinter as houseplants. This will give you a number of small plants to set out in your planters next spring. If you overwinter them as is in the baskets, it will require more space in the house; you will also need to repot them using fresh potting mix in the spring. (Always replace the soil in containers like hanging baskets every year.) Another option would be to bring the baskets into a cool but sheltered place such as an unheated garage. Water just enough to keep the soil from going bone dry and do not fertilize. In the spring, cut the plants back quite short to stimulate fresh healthy new growth and repot with fresh soil.
