I wanted to know if the middle of October is a good time to transplant my phlox, purple coneflower, sage, coreopsis and rudbeckia. Also, will they do well in a partially shaded area that has about four hours of sun. |
In my experience, all of these perennials would prefer more than just four hours of sun. They will grow best in full sun which means direct sun all day long or for a minimum of six hours including the hour of noon. If the four hours runs from noon until four in the afternoon, it might be enough. You could experiment and see. Fall can be a good time to divide or transplant perennials. It is best done in early fall so they have time to become established before the ground freezes. A rough rule of thumb would be at least 8 weeks before the ground freezes. In many areas of the country, it is too late. But if you are in an area with mild winters, you could still transplant. |
