If you have access to straw, that's the mulch most favored by strawberry growers. It's clean, it's fluffy, and it can remain year around to help keep the fruits clean. If you don't have access to straw, try using pine needles or fallen tree leaves. These materials won't pack down so they'll be easy to remove in the spring.

Best wishes with your strawberries!
