I live in Dallas, Tx. I have just moved into a new house and have plenty of room to start several gardens in the back yard, around the trees in my yard, just anywhere. Well, the problem is that I don't know a thing about gardening and I want to do it right. I understand that I am supposed to start a compost pile. Of what? When you say kitchen scrappings, what in the world do you mean? Please explain this to me in dummies terms.

Shawn,

I'll do better than that. Here are some links to great resources on composting. The first is a web site for kids (and adults!) that walks you through the process of building a compost pile.

This next site is for a printed instruction sheet:

Here's another site to help you:

Now about gardening I have one more site that has a wealth of info on all aspects of gardening:

I also suggest you contact your County Extension Office there in Dallas County. They have many free publications to send out and Master Gardener volunteers on hand to answer your questions by phone.

Good luck with the new place and new garden!
