| I have two narrow rectangular planter areas in the paver decking around my pool. I have had dwarf heliconias which were good but tended to want to spread. Lastly, I had a low bedding plant that came in a saus-edge container. It was wonderful green and white foilage, but has died. I was hoping for something different, like maybe asparagus fern or other upright fern as long as they won't multiply and cause problems with the pavers. Do you have any suggestions for this area that would be clean and contained next to my pool? There are sprinklers in the areas. Thanks, Claire Long |
| Asparagus fern is a well behaved plant and should work well in your planters. You might also consider planting ornamental grasses such as 'Dwarf Garters' ribbon grass with green and white-striped leaves; 'Puenctchen' Little dot Japanese silver grass, a compact grass similar to zebra Grass; Chasmanthium latifolium (Mountain oats), a clumping, deciduous, vase-shaped plant with lime green foliage; Schizachyrium maritimum (Coastal bluestem), a creeping, deciduous plant with blue/gray foliage; or Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' ('Shenandoah' switchgrass), a vase shaped selection with red foliage in the fall. All grow between 1-2 feet high with an equal spread so they are perfect for containers. Best wishes with your new plants! |
