Potting soil does break down over a period of years but you don't need to replace it each spring. In general, the potting soil will be fine for a period of several years. When the plant becomes potbound, place fresh potting soil in the new pot and brush away some of the older soil clinging to the roots. As long as you regularly feed your potted plants they will be happy with their current potting soil.
