how soon should I start my herb? This is a first for me so I am not sure how to do this. thank you. |
You'll want to begin by finding the sunniest site possible and then preparing the soil by adding lots of organic matter so it will drain quickly, yet retain just the right amount of moisture. Soil preparation can be done any time the soil can be worked. Bare root dormant hardy perennials may be planted as soon as they become available in the nursery so they can wake up naturally with the season. Container grown perennials that have been conditioned or hardened off (meaning acclimated to being outside rather than the greenhouse) can also be planted any time. Seed grown annuals such as dill and cilantro can be planted in mid spring. Tender annuals and tropical exotics such as basil and lemon grass, however, should be planted after the last expected frost date in your growing region. Best wishes with your new herb garden! |
