| I saved some seed over winter from some dodecaheons and want to plant them now....I was told to sow on moistened seed starting mix, cover lightly, then cover with plastic film and keep at 70 degrees. Am prepared to do all this, but want to know if the seeds need dark or light for germination. (I have kept the seed in my fridge until now in a camera film container and am ready to try to get them going.) Thanks for any input |
| By keeping them in the fridge, you have correctly given them a cold-treatment. This is called stratification and dodecatheon seeds require this in order to break dormancy and to germinate. Your seeds should be lightly covered with seed starting mix at planting time. You don't need to place them under fluorescent lights; natural light is fine. (Seeds that require light to germinate are sown on the soil surface and not covered with soil; seeds that germinate in the dark are covered with soil.) Hope this clarifies things for you. |
