The Q&A Archives: Heather as a Deer Deterent

Question: Will planting heather around the base of my rose bushes help protect them from the deer? (Or is this just another old wives tale?) Thanks! Pat Bohannon Kerrville, TX

Answer: When it comes to preventing deer damage on plants, there are lots of old wives tales floating around. I'm sorry to say planting heather around your plantings probably won't deter a hungry deer from walking through it to get to the choice plants. For a sure fire deer control either get a dog or fence the area. All other controls give temporary, at best, solutions..
