There is no easy way to rid your lawn of moles. There are many "home" remedies which are often discussed. One of these is the use of Juicy Fruit gum in the holes. This has never been proven to actually work. Another is the use of castor oil, which is mixed with water and sprayed over the yard. People who use this method claim it works, and it would do no harm to your lawn to try it, but it based on hear-say, not scientific studies. The only RELIABLE method is to use a mole trap. These traps are not easy to use, and need frequent monitoring. Because of the difficulty in ridding the lawn of moles, many home owners have learned to tolerate their existence and look for the positive aspects of them. They do aerate the lawn, and if you step on their tunnels to collapse them, the grass shows little damage. Definitely an annoyance, but not disastrous to the lawn. In the gardens, however, it's another matter, since their tunnels can disrupt the growth of vegetables and flowers. More aggressive action is usually needed in gardens. Again trapping is the only sure-fire way of getting rid of them. If it's any consolation, moles like moist, organic soil full of grubs and other delicacies. So, their presence is a compliment to your abilities as a gardener. To trap moles, find the main run by probing the soil between mounds and placing your trap there. Moles dig seldom-used tunnels off the main run, so you may have to place the trap several times before you discover their main run. It takes time and patience, but you can trap and kill the moles that have taken up residence in your garden.
