How early can I start my vegetable patch? I plan to grow string beans, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, escarole, Boston lettuce, and leeks.

In Nassau your last frost usually falls sometime between April 20-30th. If you plan to grow everything from seed, I'd suggest you think about starting your tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and leeks indoors under lights (or you can purchase them as transplants). Seeds for beans, lettuce, and escarole can be planted directly into the garden.

Allow the soil in the garden to dry sufficiently before working it in the spring. Wait until the soil crumbles in your hand when you pick up a handful of dirtand squeeze it. If it forms a clump...it's still too wet.
